Brigitte's Pom-Pom Pentagon & Hexagon Basket

A few of you have asked me about the  "Pom-Pom Work Basket" in my book.  It's featured on pages 2, 5 and 232.  I have happily spent most of the day creating the pattern for you to download... the PDF is in the "tips and instructions" section on the header bar for you to print.  Please send me pictures of your finished baskets for all to see!! ...enjoy B.

Mrs Vigors Medallion

Kerry emailed about the pattern pieces "A, B & C" on page 28 for this quilt.  I've had a look and there is a little overlap of piece A over piece B on the sketch but I feel this is insignificant. My preference would be to trim the excess off piece A. If you are photocopying the pattern and paper piecing it, remember to cut your pieces inside the marked lines to allow for the thickness of the fabrics.

Detail of the corner cut-out at the bottom of the quilt, made for a 4-poster.  I am using this quilt on a queen-sized, black iron bed at our farm at the moment and the centre, including the wide blue border, fits perfectly on the bed top and the country colours suit the setting!

I paper-pieced the central mandala and foundation-pieced the circle of triangles, and then appliqued these to the background.

Tessellations II

Lee emailed to say that pattern piece "B" has been omitted from the pattern pieces on page 207.  Clever Lee also worked out that the missing piece is a 2 1/2" square to fit all the other pieces in  the puzzle!  No-one, however, has realized that the picture for this quilt is on it's side!! Not a problem really...
I should also mention that I paper-pieced my quilt and that I have pre-cut paper pieces available on my website for Tessellations I (this quilt's brighter version).  This quilt (T-II) uses the same pieces with the addition of some hexagons.

If you find any other errors in the book, please email me, so that I can fix them here and they can be corrected in the reprint later this year.
 

Liberty Kaleidoscope

Ginger asked about the scallop fabric on the Liberty Kaleidoscope quilt. The fabric is from Kaffe Fassett's "Liberty Art Fabrics" range - "Paisley collection". I did a search online and it is still available - in several colourways. You can post here if you locate the fabric - I found it in the UK and USA, and I have seen it in a couple of Sydney shops.

Josephine Baker meets Carmen Miranda - fussy-cutting heaven!

This close up shows how the stripes and motifs have been fussy-cut, either "on point" or "square" to achieve the desired effect. Note: the repeated placement of similarly coloured pansies in the border... hexie madness!!

English Paper Piecing 4 - Fussy-cutting: on point and square

How you fussy-cut your fabrics will have a dramatic effect on the look of your paper piecing. Using stripes and geometric prints on the outer edge of diamond shapes will act as a frame around fussy-cut motifs for the centre and surrounding 8 hexagons as shown in the sketch above. Consider whether you need to fussy-cut with the featured motif "square" or "on point" to achieve the desired effect. This example is taken from the quilt: "Josephine Baker meets Carmen Miranda"

Thank you to Inez from Holland, who discovered that Quiltmania had not included a couple of pattern pieces for the Dollies quilt.  I have made a PDF of the missing pieces and also corrected the size of pattern piece "J" (the 8 pointed star) for this quilt. The PDF is uploaded in the "Tips and Instructions" section in the header bar.  My apologies for this error!
